National reports on trends and opportunities for South-South and Triangular Cooperation

Within its mandate UNOSSC supports the governments and UNCTs in the Arab states, Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States in their efforts to take stock of the existing practices of South-South cooperation, potential areas that would benefit from South-South exchanges and initiatives, as well as the knowledge, expertise and successful development experiences that can be shared with other countries. The stocktaking process results in the elaboration of recommendations intended to help the governments, private sector, civil society and UN agencies to mainstream and advance South-South cooperation in the countries.

Somalia faces tremendous difficulties in implementing its development priorities, which is largely rooted in challenges emerging from the institutional breakdown and fragmentation of Somali society following the collapse in 1991. The huge potential of the country as well as the benefits of the well-established key stakeholders, such as private sector and civil society organizations, together with the commitment of the international community can bring about substantial opportunities towards unleashing the potential of South-South and triangular cooperation for Somalia and beyond.

Considering that development issues, like good governance, transparency and anti-corruption are mostly common for Southern countries and remain priorities for governments and development partners, Azerbaijan's innovative solutions to address these issues can be useful in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and therefore be in high demand.

There is vast potential for strengthening the country’s engagement in South-South dialogue through international and regional cooperation platforms and mechanisms. The country is in a good position to share its good practices and approaches in various areas, including youth and women empowerment and perinatal care with other Southern/Eastern countries.

 

Trends and Opportunities in Advancing South-South and Triangular Cooperation in Tajikistan

Although Tajikistan is commonly perceived as an assistance-seeker, there is strong evidence for positioning the country as an important regional and global player. Transboundary issues, such as energy and water management, transport, especially roads and railways, custom services, human and animal health, climate change and environment will remain high priorities for regional cooperation.

A comparative advantage of Kyrgyzstan is its civil society in matters related to the development of democratic institutions, access to justice and transparency and accountability of public institutions by exchange of experience and know-how, provision of technical expertise or technology to other Southern developing countries.
